Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a design and simulation of electrostatic nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS)-based logic gates using laterally actuated cantilever with double-electrode structure that can implement logic functions, similar to logic devices that are made of solid-state transistors which operates at 5 V.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical modeling of NEMS switch is carried out for finding the pull-in and pull-out voltage based on Euler-Bernoulli’s beam theory, and its numerical simulation is performed using finite element method computer-aided design tool COVENTORWARE.

Findings

This paper reports analytical and numerical simulation of basic NEMS switch to realize the logic gates. The proposed logic gate operates on 5 V which suits well with conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic which in turn reduces the power consumption of the device.

Originality/value

The proposed logic gates use a single bit NEMS switch per logic instead of using 6-14 individual transistors as in CMOS. One exclusive feature of this proposed logic gates is that the basic NEMS switch is structurally modified to function as specific logic gates depending upon the given inputs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design an out-of-plane micro electro-thermal-compliant actuator based logic gates which work analogously to complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) based logic gates. The proposed logic gates used a single-bit mechanical micro ETC actuator per logic instead of using 6-14 individual transistors as in CMOS.

Design/methodology/approach

A complete analytical modelling is performed on a single ETC vertical actuator, and a relation between the applied voltage and the out-of-plane deflection is derived. Its coupled electro-thermo-mechanical analysis is carried out using micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) CAD tool CoventorWare to illustrate its performance.

Findings

This paper reports analytical and numerical simulation of basic MEMS ETC actuator-based logic gates. The proposed logic gate operates on 5 V, which suits well with conventional CMOS logic, which in turn reduces the power consumption of the device.

Originality/value

The proposed logic gates uses a single-bit MEMS ETC actuator per logic instead of using more transistors as in CMOS. The unique feature of this proposed logic gates is that the basic mechanical ETC actuator is customized in its structure to function as specific logic gates depending upon the given inputs.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the increasing relevance of Responsible Management Education (RME) to social and human welfare around the world, this paper aims to present an integrated framework that captures the essence of the principles of RME as defined by the United Nations (UN) and further set forth and embedded in the core principles of the accrediting body of business schools, namely, the American Association of Colleges and Schools of Business (AACSB). Such a framework serves as a rigorous platform for business schools and key stakeholders to integrate and implement core RME principles to deliver long-term sustainable benefits to the communities in which they operate.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual paper. The authors first define key terms of RME used in the UN and AACSB guidelines to provide a universal language for business schools to communicate with their stakeholders and to monitor RME initiatives. Next, the authors identify and map RME Principles and Standards common to both organizations that business schools can apply and integrate into their educational practices to create societal impact. Finally, they categorize the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN into four core purposes and articulate the benefits of clear and consistent messaging that aligns with the vision and mission of the institution.

Findings

The integrated framework presented here makes a unique contribution to business schools that are in the early stages of RME implementation in the following ways: It simplifies the complexity and challenges of integrating the complex RME principles outlined by the UN and the spirit of the RME principles embedded in the accreditation guidelines of AACSB; the four unique themes that emerged from our research provide business schools with a clear pathway to assess their RME progress; and the framework addresses how RME can deliver exceptional value to various stakeholders of business schools.

Research limitations/implications

There are many opportunities for future researchers to expand on our work particularly, in the areas of RME-driven curriculum development and experiential learning, embedding ethics within high-impact RME practices and developing rigorous metrics to define and measure societal impact. Future researchers may also wish to expand and refine the definitions of key terms and explore the role of societal interaction as an indicator of meaningful institutional engagement with the business community.

Practical implications

Business educators can use this framework that maps AACBS core RME themes to the RME guidelines of the UN to assess, establish and enhance their strategies to implement and improve RME-driven business education.

Originality/value

This integrated framework makes a unique contribution to business schools by simplifying the complexity and challenges of implementing RME principles outlined by the UN and that of AACSB. By integrating the principles outlined by both the accrediting body of business schools with the ideals of the U.N in a simple and elegant framework, business schools can embrace and embark on implementing one or more of the four core RME themes identified in this paper. Implementation of these principles within a core RME theme has the potential to create a strong and unique global leadership position for a business school and its graduates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to represent the findings from the first phase of an ongoing research project whose primary goal is to identify the most significant organizational internal and external cultural variables that leverage and enable a firm’s intellectual capital (IC) to make it more competitive in the marketplace.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors build on their earlier work in which Ulrich’s definition of IC as Competence × Commitment was expanded to include two additional dimensions, Creativity and Culture. The previous model explored the relationship between IC and the following five critical variables: Competence, Commitment, Control, Creativity and Culture. Here, the authors identify the most significant organizational internal and external cultural variables that leverage and enable a firm’s IC to make it more competitive in the marketplace.

Findings

This paper demonstrates the interplay between different cultural types and levels of business volatility on IC. The authors argue that the more volatile the industry is, the greater the need to secure and capitalize on IC, and the more critical it is for firms to adopt a flexible and adaptive organic culture that encourages the creation and leveraging of IC.

Originality/value

This framework is original and expands on Ulrich’s classical work on IC. It helps senior leaders and managers explore how to effectively and proactively capitalize on IC and leverage complex IC assets. The preliminary exploration into these convergent strands has provided a foundation to further develop and establish the interrelationships between organizational culture and IC.

Abstract

This chapter historicizes the social construction of racism in Brazilian society and its relation to the development of the library and information science (LIS) field. It is a theoretical-reflective research built on the scientific literature of the field of LIS and related areas that aims at reflecting on social justice in Brazilian libraries and creating strategies to confront institutional racism. The authors develop five main points to understand Brazilian racism: the myth of racial democracy, structural and institutionalized racism, the whitening ideology, whiteness, and the epistemicide of black knowledge. The authors then discuss racism and the promotion of white supremacy in library teaching and professional action in libraries. Black US American and Black Brazilian Librarianship movements show that the activism and political action of black librarians advance the development of informational counter-narratives. Finally, the authors recommend three strategies for social, racial, and informational justice in the LIS field: including ethnic-racial studies in basic university courses curricula; building diverse, inclusive collections that account for ethnic-racial themes and authors; and considering “Pretuguese” keywords while indexing, in order to counter exclusion and promote epistemic repair. The authors conclude by advocating for these strategies to steer LIS professional and educational spheres toward contributing to forward an anti-racist society.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the link between diversity in management and CEO positions and firm innovation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect that women and ethnic diversity in management and CEO positions have on the development of outstanding innovation in firms.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper conducts an empirical analysis to investigate these relationships over time using a large panel database of 1,345 publicly US traded firms.

Findings

Results revealed that gender and ethnic diversity at all levels of management exhibited a robust positive association with superior innovation competence. This finding remains robust when alternative proxies for innovation are employed. In contrast, the authors found that women and ethnic minorities at the CEO level had no significant influence.

Originality/value

Considering an output measure of innovation, the authors explore the effect of gender and ethnic minority groups in management positions as well as at the CEO level, rather than focusing only on top management teams or board of directors. The authors offer new practical insights regarding the manager selection process that are also useful to support public policy initiatives.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to adapt and validate the need satisfaction and frustration scale (NSFS) for the Brazilian gig work context and investigate the distinctiveness of the constructs of basic needs satisfaction and frustration among Brazilian gig workers.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted on a sample of 351 Brazilian gig workers.

Findings

Results from EFA supported a three-factor structure, while results from CFA psychometrically supported a six-factor correlated model. The items that constitute the NSFS presented good discriminant validity (heterotrait-monotrait ratio) and internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega coefficients). Results regarding criterion validity partially support previous empirical evidence that considers needs satisfaction and frustration independent in relation to well-being and ill-being while reinforcing the need for further investigations. The Brazilian version of the NSFS is shown to be an instrument with robust psychometric qualities to assess workers’ perception of basic needs satisfaction and frustration in Brazilian gig work context.

Originality/value

This study broadens the scope of research on basic psychological needs by introducing a valid and reliable instrument to assess workers’ perceptions of needs satisfaction and frustration in the Brazilian gig work context, a population that has been neglected in self-determination theory research.

Objetivo

O presente estudo teve como objetivos (1) adaptar e validar a Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale para o contexto brasileiro de gig work e (2) investigar a distinção dos construtos de satisfação e frustração das necessidades básicas entre os trabalhadores gig brasileiros.

Desenho/metodologia/abordagem

A análise fatorial exploratória (AFE) e a análise fatorial confirmatória (AFC) foram realizadas em uma amostra de 351 trabalhadores gig brasileiros.

Resultados

Os resultados da EFA apoiaram uma estrutura de três fatores, enquanto os resultados da AFC apoiaram psicometricamente um modelo correlacionado de seis fatores. Os itens que constituem a NSFS apresentaram boa validade discriminante (razão heterotraço-monotraço) e consistência interna (coeficientes alfa de Cronbach e ômega de McDonald). Os resultados relativos à validade de critério apoiam parcialmente as evidências empíricas anteriores que consideram a satisfação e frustração das necessidades independentes em relação ao bem-estar e mal-estar, reforçando a necessidade de mais investigações. A versão brasileira da Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale mostra-se um instrumento com qualidades psicométricas robustas para avaliar a percepção dos trabalhadores quanto à satisfação e frustração das necessidades básicas no contexto brasileiro de trabalho gig.

Este estudo amplia o escopo da pesquisa sobre necessidades psicológicas básicas ao introduzir um instrumento válido e confiável para avaliar as percepções de satisfação e frustração das necessidades dos trabalhadores no contexto brasileiro de gig work, uma população que tem sido negligenciada nas pesquisas da teoria da autodeterminação.

Abstract

Purpose

Structures play a very important role in developing pressure sensors with good sensitivity and linearity, as they undergo deformation to the input pressure and function as the primary sensing element of the sensor. To achieve high sensitivity, thinner diaphragms are required; however, excessively thin diaphragms may induce large deflection and instability, leading to the unfavorable performances of a sensor in terms of linearity and repeatability. Thereby, importance is given to the development of innovative structures that offer good linearity and sensitivity. This paper aims to investigate the sensitivity of a bossed diaphragm coupled fixed guided beam three-dimensional (3D) structure for pressure sensor applications.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed sensor comprises of mainly two sensing elements: the first being the 3D mechanical structure made of bulk silicon consisting of boss square diaphragm along with a fixed guided beam landing on to its center, forming the primary sensing element, and the diffused piezoresistors, which form the secondary sensing element, are embedded in the tensile and compression regions of the fixed guided beam. This micro mechanical 3 D structure is packaged for applying input pressure to the bottom of boss diaphragm. The sensor without pressure load has no deflection of the diaphragm; hence, no strain is observed on the fixed guided beam and also there is no change in the output voltage. When an input pressure P is applied through the pressure port, there is a deformation in the diaphragm causing a deflection, which displaces the mass and the fixed guided beam vertically, causing strain on the fixed guided beam, with tensile strain toward the guided end and compressive strain toward the fixed end of the close magnitudes. The geometrical dimensions of the structure, such as the diaphragm, boss and fixed guided beam, are optimized for linearity and maximum strain for an applied input pressure range of 0 to 10 bar. The structure is also analyzed analytically, numerically and experimentally, and the results are compared.

Findings

The structure offers equal magnitudes of tensile and compressive stresses on the surface of the fixed guided beam. It also offers good linearity and sensitivity. The analytical, simulation and experimental studies of this sensor are introduced and the results correlate with each other. Customized process steps are followed wherein two silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers are fusion bonded together, with SOI-1 wafer used to realize the diaphragm along with the boss and SOI-2 wafer to realize the fixed guided beam, leading to formation of a 3D structure. The geometrical dimensions of the structure, such as the diaphragm, boss and fixed guided beam, are optimized for linearity and maximum strain for an applied input pressure range of 0 to10 bar.

Originality/value

This paper presents a unique and compact 3D micro-mechanical structure pressure sensor with a rigid center square diaphragm (boss diaphragm) and a fixed guided beam landing at its center, with diffused piezoresistors embedded in the tensile and compression regions of the fixed guided beam. A total of six masks were involved to realize and fabricate the 3D structure and the sensor, which is presumed to be the first of its kind in the fabrication of MEMS-based piezoresistive pressure sensor.

Abstract

This chapter aims to reconstruct the trajectory of comparative education in Brazil using the timeline concept to identify structural elements in the emergence and reconfiguration of this field of study. The timeline historical perspective allows us to use two additional features: (a) the reconstruction of the scenario in which emerge the intellectual productions; and simultaneously (b) identify how themes, issues, and research objects appears, whether in a homogeneous association or not. These elements allow us to associate comparative and historical methods to recognize the supranational and supraregional influence, determining the configuration of what is meant by comparative education in Brazil. The text distinguishes seven different moments for the Brazilian comparative educational area, which are: (1) the study of the structure and functioning of European and North American systems education; (2) the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) pioneering influence on the production of annuals; (3) the prioritization of educational practices; (4) the influence of supranational relations; (5) the focus on educational public policies; (6) new cycle of supranational influence; and (7) (re)definition of the theoretical, methodological, and epistemological anchorage of comparative education. In the last quarter century, it can be said that there is a resurgence of Comparative Education in Brazil and the region, which may be associated with strong historical influences, here reconstructed by periodization.

Abstract

Financial institutions, and banks, in particular, are one of the largest investors in information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT) and there are indications that this trend is likely to continue. However, there is growing concern that IS investments are not yielding the anticipated results, an issue that is of grave concern to many CEOs and top managers. One way to address this concern is to analyse the relationship, if any, between investments in IS and an organization’s efficiency measures. Reports the results of an empirical study that assesses the role and contribution of ISs to a bank’s efficiency, based on a study of nationalized banks in the state of Florida. More specifically, reports on the role of ISs in achieving business goals, improving productivity, and enhancing customer service in banks.
